The founder of Daily Candy is Dany Levy =)

She is super cool -> http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2010/01/bachelors-kitchen-party-at-dany-levy.html

She deserve a mention!

Levy is indeed the founder, but Sheinbaum took it to new levels. Both were instrumental in the company’s success. DailyCandy is still a juggernaut with its high CPMs, but is struggling.

Interesting list of companies, another company I have seen is VitalJuice (healthy lifestyle newsletter)

yep, pretty sure Vital Juice is larger (readership-wise) than Ideal Byte ever was, too

Does anyone know if Vital Juice was bought? Saw they took the initial investment but couldn’t find any recent news on them.

FierceMarkets has been doing free, business-to-businessw email newsletters very successfully since 2002. http://www.fiercemarkets.com/about_us

Incidentally, we’re hiring.

This list is not complete without www.Lifescript.com and CEO Ron Caporale. They are easily the least known major emailer, they excel in the women’s health and lifestyle segment.

So how do newsletters monetize usually?

Through paid advertising that accompany the newsletter?

I get the no/low cost of distribution, the opt-in methods, and privacy – but still trying to figure out the business model.

Any insights. (Coincidentally, I came upon this thread from StartupDigest).

A post is coming on this topic soon..

But the short answer is direct advertising, ecommerce, or paid subscription.

These are all great people that helped the email industry become what it is today which is recognized, respected and a major player in the marketing industry.

Congrad to StartupDigest on growing their email subscriber list so quickly. I am certain more wonderful things are on the way.
